Barber Pole Worms in Goats

If you are a goat owner, you may know how scary Barber Pole worms can be.

Let's dig deeper into this so we can better understand these little creatures.

What is Barber Pole Worm?

Barber Pole Worms, also referred to as "Wireworm" or Haemonchus Contortus, are essentially blood sucking stomach worms.

These worms attach themselves to the goats abomasum (also known as the 4th and final chamber in the stomach or the "real stomach") and feed on the goats blood.

Barber Pole Worms can be hard to diagnose as they are an internal parasite and are rarely seen as an actual worm. You will most likely only see symptoms. Here we will talk about the symptoms, prevention and treatment of Barber Pole!

SYMPTOMS:

Symptoms of Barber Pole Worms may include

  • lethargy (fatigue, tiredness or exhaustion)

  • Dull coat

  • Diarrhea

  • Bottle Jaw

  • Low FEMACHA

  • On occasion visible worms.

How can I prevent Barber Pole Worms?

COPPER BOLUS

Copper Oxide Particles (Copper Bolus) is the number one preventative maintenance for Barber Pole. The Copper Bolus will increase the copper levels in your goat which helps them fight off parasites! The Copper Bolus is a slow release capsule that allows the copper wires to sit in the goats abomasum and damage the worms, thus causing them to die off.

PASTURE ROTATION

Rotating your goats pastures every few weeks can prevent and reduce the risk of parasites. When pastures are rotated the goats are given fresh grazing greens and less waste covered ground.

CLEANLINESS Cleaning feeders and waterers regularly is a huge part in preventing any parasites!

WORMWOOD

Wormwood is a natural herbal dewormer that can be given to goats weekly as a parasite preventative. Wormwood created an inhospitable environment for the worms causing them to die off.

What if I suspect Barber Pole Worms?

Depending on the severity of the Barber Pole worm infestation a Vet may need to administer fluids or even do a blood transfusion.

However if you see the signs most of the time you can treat at home!

Treat with deworming medications such as

  • Fenbendazole

  • Ivermectin

  • Albendazole

  • Moxidectin

  • Levamisole
