What is Bottle Jaw and what causes it?
Bottle Jaw is an area of edema (swelling) under the chin. This can be caused by low protein in the circulation system.
Bottle Jaw can also be a sign of a severe case of Barber Pole Worms .
Bottle Jaw symptoms are pretty basic, You will see swelling under your goats chin, it will look "puffy" and at times may be tender or cause your goat discomfort when touched.
Depending on the severity of Bottle Jaw your goat may also have
Diarrhea
Weight loss
Failure to thrive (Lethargic and seemingly unwilling to live)
*Watching for parasites can help prevent Bottle Jaw! If your goat has a low FEMACHA score, that is a sure sign of Barber Pole Worms which is a leading cause to Bottle Jaw!
TREATMENT
When treating Bottle Jaw you are essentially treating the underlying issue of Barber Pole Worms, Deworming with Barber Pole dewormers (read more about Barber Pole here)
as well as LevaMed (Levamisole) will help in treating Bottle Jaw.
Along with the dewormer and LevaMed I also recomend giving your goat
Red Cell to replace red blood cells, this helps replenish the blood supply that the worms are diminishing. (Click for more information on Red Cell and Dosing)
Power Punch If your goat seems lethargic (Click for more information on Power Punch and dosing.)
Vitamin B complex to help replenish vitamins and help with the goats healing process. (Click for more information on Vitamin B Complex and Dosing)
*ALWAYS consult your vet if you are unsure or if your goats symptoms are worsening!
